AthletesRUs.net had a chance to get a few words with future BYU shooting guard Anson Winder, product of Las Vegas’ own Bishop Gorman High School. We ask Scout.com’s 46th ranked SG about making the next step in his career, and what he has in mind for the future.
ARU: You had a great run at Bishop Gorman. What kinds of things did you
do while you were there to step up your game?
AW: I always made sure to get as many workouts in as possible, that way I would always stay sharp. Other than that I just practiced hard.
ARU: You also held it down in class, with a solid graduating GPA. What helped you
balance everything out?
AW: Definitely that strict hand of my parents. In my house it’s always grades first, then basketball second. You also must manage your time wisely.
ARU: How was playing for coach Grant Rice?
AW: Playing for Coach Rice was great; we had a good four years and we built up a great relationship.
He is great coach.
ARU: What was it like getting the call from BYU? Did you already know it
was coming?
AW: Actually I was asleep when Coach Rose had called my dad and told him the news. My dad hurried up and woke me up to tell me what had happen. I just couldn’t believe it. It was a great feeling.
ARU: Are you planning to do anything different to get ready for playing at the
college level?
AW: Yeah. I’m definitely trying to work out harder and lift as much as possible because the next level is a different game.
ARU: Have you had a chance to speak with Coach Rose at BYU yet? If so, what did he say to you?
AW: Yes, I talked to Coach Rose numerous times and we are both excited and can’t wait to get rolling.
ARU: What do you think it will take to succeed in college both academically and athletically?
AW: Most importantly time management. Between classes and basketball, one must make sure to balance both while still trying to perform at your very best.
ARU: What goals do you have for yourself at BYU?
AW: To get the best grades I can and try to reach my potential, and be the best basketball player I can be.
